THINK GLOBAL ACT LOCAL
An example showing how science, society and policy makers can work together for creating sustainable solutions under a changing climate.
The Gialova-project , is a collaboration between NEO, the Hellenic Centre of Marine Research, the University of Ioannina, the Captain Vassilis and Karmen Konstantakopoulos Foundation, and the Management body of protected areas of S. Peloponnese, funded by Yialova fish, a company which has the fish management of the lagoon.
The project brings researchers, practitioners and policy makers to work together for tackling challenges related to management of multi-functional areas, such as coastal wetlands, and provides an example for other similar areas in Greece and around the Mediterranean. The process considers resilience to future climate changes and minimization of the impact of tourism and agricultural activities on the Natura 2000 sites, by exploiting the expertise and experience of local stakeholders .
The Gialova-project will build on the extended NEO network of field measurement stations inside and around Gialova wetland, to suggest scientifically robust solutions for the gradual restoration and the co-management of Gialova wetland, under different climatic scenarios. The management suggestions will be included in reports which will be presented, discussed and validated with relevant stakeholders and policy makers prior to implementation. The final deliverable of the project will be a co-developed Decision-Making Support System, which will come in use after the completion of the project .
